Dr. Mtangulizi Sanyika will speak on “Black Power and Liberal Religion in the 1960s: Lessons for the Future.” This year marks the 50th
anniversary of what became known as the “Exodus Walkout” of black UU members (and their allies) from the denomination’s General Assembly to protest perceived racism. Sanyika was a leader of the black empowerment struggle against racism within the UU church and society during that era. He was also the architect of a new spiritual paradigm known as Black Humanism, which emphasizes the centrality of black agency in the black and human liberation project.
