The group will discuss “The Latehomecomer—A Hmong Family Memoir.” Kao Kalia Yang’s first book is the Wichita Public Library’s Big Read for 2017. Yang’s memoir is a love letter to her grandmother, as well as a troubling portrait of the consequences of U.S. intervention in Southeast Asia. The book is an account of the exodus of the Hmong people, first to refugee camps in Thailand and then, for many, to new homes in Minnesota. The author teaches at Carleton College, a private liberal arts college in Northfield, Minnesota. Brown bag lunch at 11:30, discussion begins at approximately noon.
