The book is Myla Goldberg’s “Bee Season” which is about an ordinary 5th-grade girl whose life is transformed when she wins the school’s annual spelling bee. Eliza is the daughter of intellectuals, but she has been considered among those “sad-sack C students who never get picked for Student of the Week and never get chased by boys at recess.” This first novel explores class, linguistics, and religious extremism, and is described as a “dispassionate, fervidly intelligent book.” Both Dwight Garner and Christopher Lehmann-Haupt of the New York Times give the book high marks. Bring a brown bag lunch, enjoy conversation, and join a spirited discussion about the novel.
