COMPENSATION: $29,000 plus negotiated benefits
JOB DESCRIPTION: The Contract Minister’s primary responsibilities will be providing two sermons each month, pastoral care to members and friends of the church, representing the church in the community, and providing support and guidance to the organization of the church especially related to growth.
SKILLS AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES SOUGHT:
• Ordained or in ordination process as a UU minister
• Ability to work comfortably with a range of ages and beliefs
• Encourage spiritual and intellectual growth in our congregation
• A commitment to social and environmental justice
• Articulate, comfortable and adept at speaking in a variety of settings
• Commitment to help grow the church
Our Mission Statement is “A welcoming community with diverse beliefs united for positive change.” The church has a long history related to social justice. From the Feminist Movements of the 19 th , 20 th , and 21 st centuries, the civil rights movement, the fight for reproductive freedom, and criminal justice reform, we continue to be involved in fighting for justice.
The First UU Church of Wichita is the oldest UU church in Kansas. We have about 110 members. We are a Welcoming Congregation, and we have been accepted into candidacy for Green Sanctuary status. In line with our Green Sanctuary values, recently we have installed solar panels that will cover about half of our electricity needs this year, and we plan to install sufficient panels next year to allow us to be carbon neutral. We have an annual environmental festival, Ecofest that celebrates and promotes environmental awareness and sustainability. There are several active groups within the church such as a humanist group, a pagan group, a Buddhist group, a social action committee, along with book clubs, a movie club, and an arts and crafts group.
The church has been housed in 4 church buildings over its 130-year history. We moved into our present custom-built church in 2008. Our goals in building a new church were to construct the building in an environmentally responsible manner and to position the church in a geographically attractive locale for growth. As evidenced by our Green Sanctuary candidacy, we have been successful in using our green building. However, we have not been successful in growing membership in the church. Therefore, we hope the contract minister will help the church grow.
Prior to the new building, the church had full-time ministers for most of the 20th century. The expense of building and financing the new church home disrupted funds for a full-time minister. The church needs to increase membership to afford a full-time minister.
