Rev. David Carter will present, “Mindfulness and the Empty Attic of Sherlock Holmes.” Early on in their friendship, Dr Watson was surprised to discover about Sherlock Holmes that his “ignorance was as remarkable as his knowledge.” Holmes was vehement in extolling the all-important virtue of keeping his mind “in the most perfect order.” But what astonished Watson was to discover that to protect that “most perfect order” of the mind, Holmes dismissed as utterly useless, and thus remained purposefully ignorant of literature, philosophy, astronomy, and politics. So, are we not compelled to conclude that the master detective, by his uncompromising commitment to emptying the mind of “useless facts [which end up] elbowing out the useful ones,” intentionally cultivated “mindfulness”? Stay tuned as we unravel the mystery!
